Hi All,

So the oddest thing happen the other night. I noticed that one of my young jouvenille male mandarins was missing...so I assumed that he somehow managed to escape the confines of his aviary. I all but gave up on him until a few days later when I notice that my female white mandarin was also missing. So immediately I was exicited :) Maybe she was in a nest box and sitting on eggs!

So I went looking through the nest boxes and low and behold I found the male mandarin. At first I thought maybe he was sick or got trapped in a nest box. As soon as I went to put my hand into the box he started hissing at me and moved a little. I noticed atleast 5 eggs undernearth him.

So I'm not quite sure what to think. Is this normal? I'm 90% sure he's a male. He has the colour markings....

Looking for everyones opinion on what could be going on here.

If she damaged one of her ovaries she could have male coloration. Although rare, a sitting male could happen I guess .But when you said he hissed. Then my money is on a girl. Males cant hiss. We love photos Take a pic when ya get a chance. Then you will get lots of comments. Did you find your white BTW?
