"Male" quail?

I have taken on a lone pure white male coturnix. Well so I was told anyhoo! I see no foam, and hear no crowing, but also get no eggs. But I have no idea how old "he" is - last owner had him for a year but he was a rehome when that guy took him on.

I'm looking for some hens to go with him, will I then start to see foam and get crowing if he is indeed a he? I've never had a loner before - I used to keep them years ago but I had a big mixed group so there was never any doubt.

Also, when I do find some girlies for him; do I need to do anything particular to introduce them? I'll be upgrading his current hutch to a 5x2 ark (new territory to help the process) but as he is stressed already being a loner (he was rehomed as he'd started to hassle the canaries in his previous aviary since his last girl died) I want to get it right.

Thank you!
