I am so sorry for the loss of your precious duck. I very much understand the grief of losing an adored duck. We love them so much and they become such a part of our daily lives.
Medical professionals have explained to me that there isn't really a condition known as, "old age," that humans or pets die from. As all animals get older their organs are more likely to fail, they are more likely to get cancer, ect. But it isn't, "old age," it would be kidney failure or another disease.
Without a necropsy you will never know the cause of death. We could make a lot of guesses, but they would be just guesses.
I have felt overwhelmed when my ducks have passed away, too, and I'm so sorry you lost your sweetheart.
