I am new to mallard ducks and was just wondering why my mallard hen may not be laying. She has had her drake with her for almost a year now and she hasn't shown any sign of laying. Is it too early or could it be something else. Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

Is it too early for them to be laying in South Alabama?

I am curious too. Sorry, but I don't really have an answer for you.

Not sure about Alabama but mine have been laying here and the wild mallards here are laying also so it shouldnt be long. Are they penned or free range ?

They are in a pen. I'm wondering if it could have been that I have them in a covered pen. I did get my first egg today. If I take the eggs as they lay them, will they continue to lay until I stop? Or do they only lay a certain amount of eggs and thats it?

My Mallards just kept on laying. Sometimes they would "take a day off", but I would continue to get eggs almost all year around.

They had an outdoor pen for during the day and were penned indoors at night. I would find an egg usually every morning just after day break.

With in a couple weeks after we layed a 5 gallon bucket on it's side (inside their duck pen) with some hay our mallard was nesting....
I think she just wanted some privacy....now we have 12 new little peepers zipping around!
Hope that helps!

Is that the same with the wild flying mallards?
