So, this is gonna get nasty fast. I have 4 Mallard hen and a drake. As I was locking all of my group up tonight, I noticed one of my hens butt area was wet looking. Upon looking closer I was able to see that her butt is unclinchted and wide open. All you can see inside is a wet poop but the edges of the butt hole is black... what could this possibly be? I’m so worried!

Welcome to BYC.
The first thing I can think is a prolapse but we need more info and a picture would be great as nasty as it is. I would seclude her form the rest of the flock and keep her in a warm area.
Is there blood?
What are you feeding?
Anything different in the past few days?
I’m unsure here, but just trying to help this is all I have to offer without further information.

Here is a picture. There is no blood and she is free range during the day but eats dog food and chicken laying pellets. There has not been any changes in her daily life!

Well I would not call that a prolapse. It almost looks like she is being pecked on then again I’m unsure. I would clean her up and place antibiotic (make sure it’s not pain relief) ointment around the area. Give her plenty of baths and keep her clean. I would also provide some yogurt for her and put some electrolytes and minerals in her water. Hopefully someone can reply with better insight.
