My mama and chicks are in a coop in a private run that is inside the main flock run so everyone still knows each other but mama had privacy for hatching and raising chicks. Once the littles hatched I started feeding them purina medicated start and grow in a chick feeder. Mom got plain start and grow in a hanging feeder. It didn’t take long for babies to figure a way to jump onto mamas feeder and chow down so I figured I’d just give mama the medicated starter too. After all she was eating from their dish occasionally anyway. Of course now I’m reading it’s not healthy for adults to eat the medicated feed.
How do I feed them separately. The chicks are 4 weeks this weekend. I figured I’d keep them separated until they could reach the hanging feeders without leaving the ground. I don’t want to separate mama from them as I believe she will protect them when they finally join the main area.

It will not hurt her to eat the medicated chick feed one bit.

Is she back to laying eggs?
Thank you. I forgot to mention hubby bought a full 50 lb bag of the medicated stuff so I don’t know what else to do with it all.
No mama hasn’t laid any eggs yet. When do they usually resume? How will that impact her relationship with the chicks?

I have no clue how egg laying will impact that relationship.
I was only asking because if she is laying eggs she needs more calcium than what is in the starter feed.

Pick up a small bag of oyster shell to offer while you feed that 50 pound bag and start offering it to her now. In a small dish.

Oh! Yes of course! I failed to include that I do offer mama Doris oyster shell! I feed my whole flock flock raiser and offer OS on the side. I also offer sides of grit for the adults and sides of chick grit for the littles.
