Managing a new flock

I am about take on management of a new flock of chickens for some friends. (Looong story.) But my problem is this, they have a few roosters. There are a couple americana roosters, that are very sweet, and one Leghorn Rooster that attacks. Since I will need to deal with the leghorn on a daily basis how do I stop these attacks?

I think you need to show the rooster that you are in charge. If he attacks you, just kick him back, or something like that. Someone in BYC, (forgot the username), I believe, picked up the rooster by his legs, gave him a “speech” and she said he attacked less. Hope that helped in some way!

A long, hot, calming herbal bath?

Carry a tennis racket around. If needed, you can push him back away from you (gently or with as much force as needed without being too excessive.) Tennis rackets are bouncy and will deflect if he were to charge at you to violently attack.

Truthfully roosters have ruined the whole chicken experience for a lot of people. I would cull the leghorn. Either by processing him myself, or offering him for free on craigslist. Getting attacked for bringing feed and water is not enjoyable.

Roosters can be very aggressive, dangerously so. I do not care to be attacked, and would not keep him. Some people feel guilty or wish that he would be nice, but it really does not work.

Get him out of there, you are already got your hands full with a new experience, don't make it worse by keeping him.

Well, then give him back and tell them to cull him. No matter what the story is, I would not expect someone to take a beating for taking care of my birds. THAT is unrealistic. If you want to keep doing so, be very aware, the attacks tend to get worse, and they can get very sneaky.

But a lot of people do put up with it. If you have little ones, be very aware.
