Managing Roosters

With 41 new chickens I am bound to end up with a few roosters (hopefully not too many). How many will be too many and what can I do with the ones I don’t want?

One rooster to each of ten hens-providing you want fertile eggs. If you don't want fertile eggs or a guardian for the hens, no roosters need to be kept.

Butcher, sell, or give away.

If straight run chicks, you will have half cockerels, or more. If all are supposed to be pullets, it's true that a couple of cockerels mat turn up. Then, it depends on you, and how they behave.

They are supposed to be pullets. The last time I had babies I ended up with four roosters. I kept two and gave two away as I thought they were too aggressive with the hens. The two Araucana roosters I did keep were great! I’m not sure what I will do with any roosters this time. It’s not easy to give away roosters.
