Hi everyone,

I am new to keeping mandarins and I will have some next spring that will start mating (hopefully) but my question is, I have two hens and one drake mandarin, will the drake mate with both hens or will he only mate with one since I know that they're know for pairing?

Thanks!!!

From my experience they only pair. Bonded pairs are very devoted. We kept our birds in "mixed aviaries" and even from one year to next, the mandarins paired up with their mates from previous years. We even had some "extra" singles in our aviaries and never saw them trio or even choose a different mate from one year to the next. I have heard some people claim sometimes they do trio, but it hasn't been our experience in almost 30 years. Let us know what your experience is next summer.

Hope this helps. Good luck and enjoy your ducks.

I will definitely let you know what happens. Maybe I'll get lucky and they will trio, but we'll see. Apparently the drakes are very easy to find since everyone has extras of them, so if they end up where they don't trio I should be able to find another drake pretty easily to pair with the other hen. Thank you for all your helpful advise!!
