So we HAD 2 cuckoo marans and 3 dark brahmas. All were laying close to 1 egg a day each up until March 3. On March 3 a hawk feasted on one of the marans in front of the other birds.

Now the other maran only seems to lay 1 egg every 3-4 days. All the chickens hatched on April 30-May 10, 2014, so they are almost exactly 1 year old. Only the maran seems affected, as the other birds are laying 1 egg a day, occasionally skipping here or there. All are healthy otherwise.

Thoughts? Could it be that the maran is depressed?

I believe chickens can become depressed, especially if something stressful happens. Not sure how to Depression and drop in egg production are also the most common symptoms of disease, but if she otherwise seems fine, then I wouldn't worry. I heard that a couple drops of Rescue Remedy pet version could work.

It's now been 6+ days and no egg from the 1 year old maran. All of my other chickens (brahmas) lay every day. The maran seems healthy...acts fine, does not show signs of discomfort. It feels like she has an egg when I pick her up but that is hard to tell. The only thing I notice that is different is that she us more independent, stays away from the other birds in the flock a little bit though not avoiding them. Also, being smaller, she jumps out of the compost pile when other chickens come. However, she is the best of the bunch at finding earthworms this spring. I know because I see the brahmas take them from her.

I thought about that, but it turns out she laid an egg right after i posted this. Also, she would be eating only get own eggs as none of the other chickens were doing that in the same nest boxes.

I'm worried she has a disease our something but looks healthy, and the drop in production seemed to coincide with the death kid get sibling.

Do chickens at 1 year ever drop in production for no apparent reason?
