For the moment I have given up on shipping marans eggs. I will only sell chicks this season. It seems that they do not fare well in shipping. Every other breed I have, including ducks does well when shipping eggs, but for some reason the marans hatch rate goes to pieces.

They hatch everywhere from 19 - 23 out of 24 here. Ship them and that goes to 0 - 4 out of 24. Anyone else out there experience this problem?

Hello Kstaven

I live in British Columbia and have ordered chicks from Rochester hatchery in Alberta 4 springs now and have never heard of Maran eggs. What kind of chicken are they or are they another bird?

Marans are a french breed of chicken. There are not a lot of good ones up here in Canada. The hatchery ones are garbage for the most part, when you can find them. The exception is Eric Rivard at genetic preservation in Quebec.

They lay a DARK brown to brick red egg. Go to feathersite.com and look up Marans.

If you can't access chicks and want some let me know. May be able to work something out.

I've got fourteen Black Coppers in the incubator right now. I'll try to remember to post the hatch rate on Feb 15th.

Last year, I put three in an incubator (two hatched), and nine under a broody (she changed her mind and got off them after a week).
