Ah that's good. You'll also end up with some other interesting shades by using your Marans roo over other coloured hen eggs, if you have any blue layers you'll get olive layers out of the mix.
 
the dark egg comes thru the male. Make sure your rooster comes from a sire whose dam was a dark egg layer. His dam should also have been a dark egg layer.
Take a look at the results of the Marans egg shows listed online. Make notes on which strains are consistently winning. Check with each of the Marans Clubs online. They should be able to send you to the results. Then contact one of the winning strains and tell them you want a studcock to head your flock. That you are looking for a male whose heritage I have already described above.
Buy a young started cockerel or an older retiring cock. Buy by dark egg pedigree.

I'd forgotten I'd read that - so actually looking at how dark the eggs you are choosing are won't help decide if the offspring will be dark egg laying. Thanks for the reminder!
