I noticed my hen is starting to get saddle feathers. Its about 6 months old. I have no idea what the breed is. I'm assuming a cochin or silkie mix of some sort. It has feathered legs. Is my pullet really a roo?

Hi Marty!
Edit: Are you positive he's 6 months old? That seems so late to be getting saddle feathers, but what do I know.
I'm not 100% positive on age. I got him and he was roughly 4-5 months and I've had him for a month. So I guessing 5-6 months old. I'm just baffled cause not much of a comb or waddle. It drives me nuts that chickens are so hard to sex. This is my first flock and it's been a constant learning curve.

Same! Where is the comb??

This is such a ridiculous question, but are you sure she didn't get wet on the backside and manage to perfectly shape her feathers into hair-like saddle feathers? I can't believe I'm even asking this. 🤣
Its totally possible

Its totally possible! Its stormed here last night and they are free range.🤞🏻

It might be a Buff Brahma, or a Brahma-mix.
Brahmas have feathered feet and pea combs.
Your bird also has feathered feet and a pea comb.

Brahmas are also known for being slow to mature, so the males can show saddle feathers and red combs at a later age than many other breeds.

(It could just as easily be a mix of Cochin and Easter Egger, or several other options, rather than Brahma.)

I guess time will tell...I'm just so impatient! Thank you all for the insight! One of my other hens has wet feather on her saddle that look pointy, so here's to hoping she is still a Marigold! Lol
