Hello, I recently bought a chick waterer base that you attach to a mason jar. However, it doesn't seem to be working for me :( First I fill up the jar then screw on the base. I then flip it over so the base is on the ground. But whenever I do this all the water just gushes out. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

There may be a slight crack in the base, or the jar isn't fitting tightly to the base. Is it a "real" canning jar, or something else? Sometimes the threads vary a little on mayo jars and things like that.

Frustrating isn’t it when something simple doesn’t work like it should. The way those things are supposed to work is on the principle of a vacuum. The water runs out of them through the holes in the bottom base until the level of the water in the base covers those holes. Then the air pressure outside and the suction of the vacuum inside equalize and water stops running out until the water level in the base drops below the holes. Then it refills. There are a few possible problems.

A real common problem is that he base is not level. Whatever you are setting it on has to be practically perfectly level or all the holes won’t be covered when the base is full. So make very sure what you are setting it on is very level and the base is setting level.

I assume you are using a glass mason jar? If it is plastic you may have a hole in it somewhere that does not allow that vacuum to form.

Are you screwing the jar on straight or is it cock-eyed? Look at the level of the bottom of the jar compared to the position of the holes. You probably need to get a decent seal along those threads to get it to work.

I use a plastic version that does not have a sealing ring at the base to mason jar connection. Maybe yours is supposed to have a gasket of some kind?

It’s possible yours is just defective. If the holes are up to high or the base sides are not high enough, it won’t work.

It's also possible you mistakenly purchased the mason jar FEEDER instead of the waterer. Can you post a photo? Or describe what it looks like? The feeder will not hold water at all.
