Hi everyone,

One of my ten month old marans has a mass at the base of her keel - it’s relatively soft but not like a water balloon, feels more like a cyst to me but I’ve never dealt with anything similar!! She’s behaving completely normally, bright and alert, eating/drinking etc, only noticed because I happened to see her from below while perched!

Welcome to BYC. Can you identify where the crop is, and make sure it is not a full crop? Breast blisters can be found on keels if the chicken has been roosting on a rough perch or on moist bedding. Is there a scab?
Thank you! And thanks for replying! Her crop feels normal. It’s much further down - looking carefully you can see it hanging lower as she walks. She avoids laying on shavings and none of their perches are rough, she doesn’t spend an excessive amount of time roosting either. How long would one take to develop?

Did you ever figure out what this is? I have a guinea hen who had same thing, only it was much squishier. We thought impacted crop, but when we went to surgically open up, after 2 layers of skin, this dark purple odorless liquid came spewing out. We got it all out and she seemed fine, but within a week, it has filled up with fluid again. She acts fine, I can just tell it is getting in the way of everything. It feels warm and has dropped down much lower now. I am not sure if I should treat it as breast blister and give her antibiotics or try to lance it again.
