I just had a chicken........ pass on 5 minutes ago. You wanna know why? Because My LOCAL DUMB ol' Tractor Supply Co. went cheap on me and put this stuff as big as rabbit feed in the feed now, instead of the standard, crumbly Layena! My chicks i bought 5 months ago are now pullets! Yay!!! 1 passed on due to a predator.(My Dachsund) The other just passed on because of CHOKING TO DEATH on Its own feed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im never going to the TSC in St. Augustine ever again

All my chickens eat the standard, crumbly Layena just fine. If you live in St. Augustine, FLA and have chicks, don't by from the TSC there for your newly aged Pullets. ESPECIALLY small ones: Seramas, Japanese, Sebrights, ext.......

I too am so sorry for this loss. But I'm a bit puzzled too, since my small bantams & young chickens all handle pelleted feed just fine. The stuff I get is the same size as the pellets my rabbits eat, little cylinders about 1/8 - 1/4 inch in diameter, about 1/4 - 1/2 inch in length. (I am guessing at the dimensions since it's too cold to go out and get some to measure.) I know it's smaller than whole kernels of dried corn, which they also eat safely, and with relish. The only time I've seen a chicken choke to death was during check-in at our county Fair, it was a tiny Dutch bantam hen but she choked on crumbles. It was ground fine enough, but she was hungry & bolted her food too fast.

I am sorry for your loss, and grateful that you posted this warning. But maybe we need to know for certain what caused the problem, so we all can avoid it in the future.

Until recently, the pellets was all I could get in the layer feed. Recently, the small walmart in town started carrying limited feed, and one is layer crumble. My little girls certainly like it better, but have always eaten the other when it was all we had.

Actually, Pudding was another bird I lost a few weeks ago, she died of Streptococcis. She was a RIR and ate the feed just fine. The bird I just lost was a Japanese bantam Roo named Smokey.
