Materials for my chicken run floor

We live on 5 acres where there is not one square inch of level ground. So, our coop and run are being built in an area where there will be a certain amount of run off during storms. I have read where pea-gravel or sand is a good option in areas where you might need good drainage. Has anyone used these materials for this reason and should I put straw or other materials on top of the sand or gravel? Our winters and springs are quite wet. Thanks! My chicks come in two days and we are getting excited!

Sand drains well. Easy for the chickens to scratch around in. I would not put anything on top of it because the chickens will turn it under or it can get messy and wet.
