Howdy folks,
I am in the process of designing a 6' high roost for the new tractor and am trying to figure out how to make it accessible.
Due to the design of my tractor and wanting to build the roost frame entirely from the side wall (so nothing touching the ground) the easiest setup would be 3 steps which are offset from one another 2' horizontally and 2' vertically (so each step is effectively a 2.83' jump at 45 degrees, if that makes sense), with the final step being the actual roost. The step/roost will be 2.75" wide.
Cross sectionally it will look something like this (the == are the steps, which would go into/out of the monitor)
:
<---- 2' ---->

This looks like quite a lot but I've seen my chickens jump up to ~3'6" perches before so I was wondering if this would be acceptable? Taking into account that they will also be dismounting in this manner in the morning.
The other possibility was adding a 45 degree ladder on each of the steps. Again, from previous posts I've heard it said 45 is about the threshold, although this hasn't really been verified.
If anybody has any input or general comments I'd love to hear it.
