Hi guys...quick update. Since the new girls had been in quarantine at the vet/shelter i got them from for >1 week, I kept them separated from the rest of the flock for a further 5 days in their own coop and run. Today I put them in with the rest of the flock. So far there is no blood but man the rooster is pecking the heck out of them...i think comparing their weight/feet/comb size/feathering and overall body size with my own birds Im guessing they are around 12-14 weeks old.
I know the pecking order has to be sorted out i just hope they dont get seriously hurt in the meantime..the run they are in is 40x30 feet, and has 2 coops and plenty of roost space in it for the birds...there are now 26 chickens and 5 ducks in there. ( roughly 40 sq feet per bird of run space give or take.)
well its been a couple of days with the new girls in with the main flock. They had to take their share of pecks and sqwarks from the others, particularly our RIR roo but that seems to have settled down now. There was no bloodshed and thankfully the run is big enough or everyone to get away from one another. They still sleep in the outside roost area rather than in the coop with the others although im sure that will change with time.
i dunno when to expect eggs from them as i have no idea as to their ages. They seem a little bigger than my RIW but about the same size as the RIR who are 13 weeks old today ( or 12 weeks..i lose track now).
