meal worm raising troubles

I started out with 1000 mealworms. After a couple of months I was excited to see little tiny babies. Well, those babies all seem to die off long before getting big enough to feed to my chickens. I wanted to buy a starter set from Sillybirds, but was broke. i decided to take out all of the beetles and start a second colony. Well, the beetles are doing well, but now I am seeing tiny orange specks. Any idea what these specks could be?

The orange/brown specks in my worm bin are their droppings. Did you give your worms & beetles enough food/bedding and did you provide them something for moisture like carrot or apple or potato? I wonder why they died?
