today i had my 3 silkie chicks outside (they're a week old today) and i decided to put a few mealworms in with them (one at a time)....and yes, they've had grit......but it was so FUNNY!

i wish i had a video to show everyone! the tiniest chick didn't have a clue what was going on....he just kinda watched the other two while he pecked around on the ground. At first when i dropped the mealworm down into the cage, they didn't know what to do....but a few seconds later one of the chicks picked it up and RAN! all the while proclaiming with LOUD cheeps for everyone to look at what he had! i was trying to tell him not to draw attention to himself since he obviously didn't want anyone to get what he had.....and the other chick ran after him......long story short, sometimes they would get a chance to gobble them down before the other got it.....but other times the chick without the mealworm would get ahold of the worm in the OTHER chicks mouth and the other chick would NOT let go....so they're both tugging really hard and playing tug-o-war.....it was so funny!

can't wait to show DH. NOW i know why i started a mealworm farm. Too CUTE!!!

ok, update, just tried to show DH how cute they are with the mealworms and they wouldn't do it! they didn't want anything to do with them! i must've been cuz they were in their brooder when i tried to show hubby, instead of outside. lil' boogers! it figures they wouldn't do it!

That's our daily fun time here...watching our little guys go nuts over the mealworms. We call it the "Mealworm Marathon." I'll never understand why they start peeping loudly, announcing to everyone (nana, nana, booboo!) that they have a treat and running around trying to keep it away from all the others! The tug-of-wars crack us up, too! A friend of mine placed an order of 500 super worms for me and I'm thinking about keeping some to the side so they can do their thing and make more worms.

All I do is put them in saw dust and throw in some cut up potatoes every once in awhile. I'm almost positive that you're supposed to use something other than sawdust but I just can't remember at the moment. Have you tried an online search yet? I'm betting that there is tons of info there. I'd look for you but I'm getting ready for bed.

It was a long day.

Mealworms can be raised in old fashion oatmeal. You need the worms to turn into beetles. First they turn into a alien looking thing. separate these because the worms will eat them.
They will turn into beetles. I give them carrots or apples to eat. Don't put to much at once or the oatmeal will spoil. It takes a while to get worms. It is easier to buy them from the internet.
