Hi.....new to BYC but have been relying on info that I've gathered for quite some time. I've been a chicken owner for over a year now. I have 2 Black Australorps, 2 Buffs and 2 Speckled Sussex. My one Buff kept picking on the other and super mean, so I got rid of her after separating them and it not helping. Then the other Buff went broody on me and wouldn't give up. I don't have any roosters. (Probably should have gotten rid of miss broody, that's probably why the other was picking on her). So I acquired 6 fertilized eggs in which 4 have hatched. They are mixed. They are 4 weeks old now. I keep them separated from the flock but near. Momma is so mean she won't let me get near the chicks so now the chicks won't let me get near them either. Should I get rid of Momma, or the chicks, or all of them so the rest of my flock can live peacefully again? Or do I need to be patient and see what happens when I introduce them all together?

Sometimes a hen will be very protective of her chicks. Thats good for the babies, but not for you. I hatch chicks and i use my bantam hen, who is so small she can't break the skin when she pecks, and she is fairly friendly, but she leads the chicks away from me when i try to catch them. Just yesterday the chicks i hatched out for my neighbor were ready to go to their new home, and I could not catch them. So i had to call the neighbor and tell her that i had to wait until dark to catch them. I don't think you need to get rid of either. Just wait it out. Maybe you can lure them to you with bread, meat, or egg. I think being patient is best. They will grow up and then everything will return to normal again, except that these babies as adults aren't going to be friendly either.
