I just got my chicks today and was wondering if i should be feeding medicated feed or putting antibiotics in the water? I am feeding regular starter feed for chicks from Dumor, and i dont believe it is medicated, so should i be giving medicated feed or putting antibiotics in their water? I have 8 chicks.

Don't put antibiotics in their water unless they're sick. Medicated feed has amprolium in it to deter cocci. Many people cannot get medicated feed. If you suspect cocci with symptoms like puffed up, listless, and bloody poop, get some Corid and mix with the water.

In addition to the comments you receive to this question on this thread, I recommend you search this message board for other threads that discuss that topic. You will get opinions from two camps: those that medicate and those that don't. After reading a lot of information from both, you can make a decision for yourself.

I don't medicate or provide antibiotics. I keep a clean brooder, and provide a good quality starter feed and clean water. Change the litter if it gets too soiled and don't let poop accumulate in the water or feed. That's worked fine for me.

Same! Choosing medicated is a fine choice (although not the choice I make), but adding antibiotics when it's not necessary isn't a good idea, IMO!
