I'm soon to start my 3rd. batch of chicks (freedom rangers). I was thinking of NOT starting them on medicated feed but to give them corid once they get out in the pen. Has anyone done anything like this. My thinking is that they really don't need the medicated feed in the clean brooder but will need some help once out on the soil that has the cocci in it. Or has anyone gave chicks the liquid corid and not done medicated feed??

Actually the best plan IMO is to start them on the medicated starter AND expose them to the dirt. They need exposure to organisms, in this case coccidia, in order to kick start their immune system to build an immunity against it. A body can't develop an immunity to something that its never been exposed to. The medication in the starter, usually amprollium, will aid in keeping the number of coccidiosis from getting high enough to harm the chick.
