Wondering your thoughts on Medicated or non medicated feed for baby chicks? Pe-peep hatched out 3 chicks today and perhaps 2 more on the way!!!!
I started out with non medicated Dumor Chick starter 24% protein. I did get a bag of purina start and grow MP 0.0125% medicated. I am not sure what to do. The house is kept very clean and the hen and 1 rooster will have access to the same feed I feed the chicks. What would you do? These are the only 2 starter feeds I could find local. If feeding the medicated Purina start and grow it has amprollium in it.....can the eggs of the hens be eaten after they have had this to eat? I have a small flock. in the chicken house is the hen and her chicks with one rooster the only ones eating the chick starter will be the hen, chicks and perhaps the rooster when I let him back in....I took him out today during the hatching and did not return him yet. This brings up another question.....will a rooster try to hurt the chicks? This is my hens first hatch and my first too! Hope all is well with you.

Good Evening Ms. Diane,

Medicated chick feed is a requirement, and I have never heard of complications from eating eggs from a hen who may also eat some of the same starter feed, although don't you have her eating straight laying mash. (I have heard that ducklings shouldn't eat medicated feeds.)

And yes your roo could very well harm the chicks, it's best to keep him segregated until the Lil' Ones are larger and faster.

I recently purchased a couple 4 week chicks. I was advised by a few members here to feed just grower to all chickens in one coop or area until they are all laying not sure if layer feed will harm chicks? But to also make sure your laying chickens have plenty crushed oyster shells as they will eat enough to keep up for egg production and the chicks will not eat enough to do any harm. Congratulations and Goodluck with the new chicks!

MEDICATED baby chicken feed doesn't have any medication in it. It only contains a synthetic protein that the one celled organism that causes Coccidiosis is unable to metabolize as its energy source.

This renders the Coccidiosis one cell animal incapable of reproducing in the gut of baby chickens and this gives the chick a chance to fight off the disease until such time as the chicks have developed a natural resistance to Coccidiosisdosis.

It is not in the interest of certain originations to tell you the truth about medicated chicken feed because these organizations real goal is the eventual destruction of ALL poultry keeping or other forms of commercial, as well as non-commercial animal husbandry. So instead they scare you with wild tails about your babies being born with two heads or a tail. Besides if you want to give chickens drugs it is mostly administered through their drinking water and even this is rare because of the fact that on a large scale poultry Antibiotics are usually expensive, ineffective, and counter productive.
