Hi all,

I've posted a few times about Violet our adopted hen. We were told she is a Lavender Brahma aged approx 12 months and that she started laying in March.

Violet was being picked on after her sister was taken by a fox, she was very skinny and having a hard moult when we got her.

Anyway we were not fussed on her breed and didn't really consider she might be something else and well curiosity got me when another thread I posted a picture of Violet and they suggested a few breed options. So my question is any idea what breed/s might she be or what I'm looking for to be able to tell.

Second question is how do I age her? She hasn't laid an egg but has been moulting so that's not surprising but husband is convinced she's much older. Again just curiosity, she has a home regardless.

I've attached her before and after shots but if you need more from different angles I can surely try.

Thank you for your help!

Lavender Brahma. She’s very pretty!

Sorry, I don’t know how to tell how old a bird is.

Thank you both, that's good to know she looks like a lavender Brahma, I like to know their breed or combination of breeds it fascinating to me.

I'm not sure how to describe her scales, rough maybe, I would say they look older and her nails seem long to me, should I trim these? No spurs only tiny dots where they come out.

They actually look rather nice. I'm thinking she's about a year old. Brahmas *should* be slow to mature. Having one be a year old and not laying yet isn't too concerning.

Thank you, that's great news. She has been through a lot bless her but it's good to know she is probably young enough to surprise us with an egg in the future.
