Lenny was big, black and beautiful!
She was born Thanksgiving Day, Thursday 11/22/2012 somewhere near Half Moon Bay and we got her the very next day. We raised her with loving care from a chick the size of one of those Easter Peeps to a full-on badass hen. She ended up laying extra large terra cotta color eggs; usually one egg every day.
Her breed 'Black Star' is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a Plymouth Barred Rock; primarily an egg layer breed. They’re typically gentle (check), quiet (check) and a regular egg layer (check).
Lenny's voice seemed to honk at the end of everything she said, something like "bok bok bok HONK”... Cute....
She was at the very bottom of the hen's pecking order, but always got in there first when treats were to be had and she was so big, the other girls couldn't do anything but break away like bowling pins after a strike. Lenny was more interested in humans than the other girls and would fly right up on your head and look down at you, which was a bit concerning since she could peck your eyes out if she wanted to. She never pooped on me -- can't say that for the other girls. She was a healthy well taken care of bird who lived a fairytale life as far as chickens are concerned.
Lenny died on Tuesday 5-13-2014 of natural causes and was survived by her three sisters, Lavern, Shirley and Squiggie. Her closest friend was Lavern who was clearly calling out for her all day. These are intelligent animals and they know a family member died. I buried Lenny in the back yard where she lived out her life.
