Merecks

Quote:
Mareks is something that they have to be exposed to after they hatch. It's a type of herpes virus. If a chick is properly vaccinated and kept quarantined for at least 10 days after vaccination, they can be protected from marek's. It is not something they are hatched with.

Can't walk, flopping around and unable to control direction (they flop on their backs and sides a lot). Heavy breathing.

So far poop looks pretty normal. So, I didn't think it was cocci, although I did have an outbreak of that too, with this same group. 6 of them. But different symptoms altogether. These chicks have been on antibiotics for a week for the cocci prevention.

The article that I read said Merecks usually occurs in young layers or about to be layers. That is why I corrected my post about them being 4 weeks and not months
.

Any other ideas?

This is what I think. Spraddled Legs. I thought they were too old for this at a month. But I backed of of the shavings and they were slipping around a bit. None have died yet, and they are eating.

Can I repair my rookie move?

Thanks

18 tsp of ry crumbles
18 tsp of milk any kind

i noticed this measurement in Glenda's post earlier. if it's helpful to anyone, 18 teaspoons is equal to 6 tablespoons or 3/8 of a cup. i'd hate to see anyone measuring out 18 teaspoons of something.

i hope your chicks are o.k. and that you find the right answer.

I used a band aid and taped their legs together. Two are up now, two still on their side and two lying down but in an upright position.

I put an inch of shavings on the brooder floors, and if no one else comes down with the problem, then I think this was probably what it is.
