The symptoms are this:
1) paralysis of the wings, neck and legs.
2) loss of weight
3) grey iris or irregular pupil
4) vision impaired
5) skin around feather follicles raised and roughened

It can be a slow death depending on what the presentation of symptoms are. As long as the chicken is living it's shedding the virus.

There are a lot of other things that seem like Marek's though. Worms can cause similar symptoms among other things.
