In the Brooder
I have 3x ISA Brown mature hens and a few weeks back bought 4x point of lay White Leghorns. I housed the Leghorns in a secondary coop, located around 25 meters (around 80 ft) from the original. I have an acre that I let the chickens free range on, so it's quite spacious. Original hens checked out the new ones and eventually I let the new ones out. It's been absolutely fine so far. The brown hen at the bottom of the pecking order will occasionally chase one of the new ones if they get too close, but the other two are pretty chilled about it unless a new chicken tries to steal their food. I've attached a pic of them all eating in the same area without any trouble.
Now, because the Leghorns are still young, they keep a bit of distance (around 3 feet) from the older birds and get a bit nervous if anything causes that space to shrink. The two flocks do mingle, but then separate. Will there come a time when the new chickens will start following the old ones around by themselves? Or do I have to integrate them into the same coop first? (I was hoping they'd integrate and follow the existing flock home). I'm not going to rush the process, they've been mingling in the yard for about a week and a half now....I just want to know if they will start acting as one flock, or if I have to put them into the same coop first.
