In a previous thread i said that one of our chickens had a swollen foot, from bumblefoot. The vet prescribed Metacam. We were reluctant to give it to her because of the side effects listed - like renal failure - but her foot became more swollen and so we gave the correct dose for 3 days as recommended by the vet. The swelling has gone down. Its been a week since we last gave her any and she has become less active. She is also ‘gaping’ and sneezing. She is still laying eggs but i noticed that the last egg she layed had a grey band around the centre. She is eating. It has been very hot over the last few days but none of our other chickens our displaying the same symptoms.
Here is a picture of her egg:

I just wanted to know whether anyone else has any experience with symptoms like this, or if anyone knows what we could do?

Is she sneezing quite a bit every few minutes or so? A respiratory disease infectious bronchitis virus can cause a number of egg shell issues, and stress is another common cause. Is she close to a molt, or being picked on? Pictures of any swelling of the foot are welcome. Here is a good article on egg shell problems and possible causes:

She is sneezing a lot. She is not molting and is not being picked on by any of the others either. I will take a picture of a foot today.

How is the coop ventilation? Dust, mold and other environmental things can cause sneezing. Some sneeze during eating because of dusty feed. If she has infectious bronchitis virus, it can affect egg shells. It lasts about a month before going away on its own. But usually it spreads to other birds in the flock. I would look at her beak for any blockage of her nostrils, and look for any mucus drainage or bubbles in either eye.

Thr coop is well ventilated. We clean out the poos everyday and do a 'deep clean' every few months to get rid of any dust and dirt. We have seperated her from the others to avoid whatever she has spreading. Her eyes are clear and her nostrils are clean.
She had mycoplasma about 2 years ago and recovered quite well. Could it be that it has come back? We have some Tylan we could use to treat her.

Metacam (Meloxicam) is an NSAID and they all can potentially have GI and renal side effects but Meloxicam is considered ‘safer’ than say aspirin but most NSAIDs are very safe in most patients if given at proper dosage, frequency and there are no underlying GI or renal issues and the patient is properly hydrated. This also assumed it is safe on a given species: flunixin meglumine is toxic to quail as is Tylenol in cats. Respiratory issues are evident in your bird and either infectious or air quality (dust, etc) should be considered. Could also be a symptom of a systemic infection (swollen joints, lung issues).

We looked in her mouth and i can see a yellow lump down her throat similar to the one i mentioned in another thread. I tried to take some photos but they are quite blurry as they are so far down her throat:

They yellowish gunk down her mouth could be whats causing her to gasp for breath. We are going to try and take her to the vets tomorrow morning.

We called a vet and they said we could give her tylan and metacam together. From what i saw though they cant be taken together. The vet also said we could give her ACV and garlic extract in her water. How much ACV should we give her? Can we give it to her directly ?I also saw that canker is a protozoa and as tylan is an antibiotic will it work? Metacam is also anti inflammatory so will that help? We have asked whether metronidazole is available as i have seen that it can treat canker

We have put her in a seperate coop for the night. After we administered the metacam and she went purple and was struggling to breathe. She calmed down slightly and went to a normal colour. Im afraid she wont last the night. We may be able to get carnidazole or a medicine for canker tommorow.

I suppose i should update. We went to the vets, and he prescribed a medicine for all our chickens. Aspen got better, and we put her in the coop before we gave the medicine. When we checked on her, she was dead. Looking at the pics again, i can see the canker was on the opening to trachea (?), so she suffocated.
All the others canker was treated
