Would a metal tray hold heat better and help the water evaporate into humidity better than a plastic one?

I'm looking for subtle ways to raise my humidity just a tad.

Thanks for the help!

Metal also conducts heat, so it may also damage your bator (think slide in the sun all day).

Could you put a small sponge in there to wick water and give more surface area?

Thanks for the quick reply Saddina. I have a sponge in there already...right in the dish...it covers most of the bottom, so I thought that might help prevent the metal from getting too warm on the bottom of the 'bator. I wonder.

Maybe another sponge pinned to the wall? I'm just trying to plan for lockdown before it happens. I'll need to raise humidity by 25points (it's very dry here now) for it to be hatchable. Subtle was the wrong word, in my original post. LOL. I mean any and all tips. LOL!!!

Here's what I did. Take a tin can smaller size. Make a cover with two holes about 1/2". Fasten a T On the cover (wood preferably) This "T" will be about 3" high or higher depending on how much head room you have. I used some balsa wood I had on hand and glued it all together. Gorilla glue worked fine on metal and wood. Now fasten twine or cotton rope to the ends of the T and down thru the holes into the can. Fasten the twine or rope onto two metal nuts for weights. Fill the can with water. The water will wick up and evaporate into the bator. No stinky sponge. Works great for me, brought the humidity right up. You need the cover to prevent the chicks from drowning.

I have one of those fat sponges that are like 3 inches thick and meant to wash a car in mine (trimmed to fit the plastic tub) Loads of surface area.

Thank you for your response. I'm having a difficult time picturing this in my head...is it possible to post a picture of what you mean? This sounds like an interesting option.

Saddina...I went and looked at my sponge and it appears to actually be made of microfiber? Huh. Maybe that's my problem. I will switch it up for a regular old sponge and see if that helps.

Thank you everyone.
Emily
