I came across these discussions on MG. Now I am worried that mine may have had it. I have read lots on this but still unsure. OK if they did have MG then they are carriers. So all of my birds will end up getting exposed if they come in contact. Is there no way to totally cure them. Is there anyway to get it out of the soil if the sick birds are distroyed? Can I vaccinate to protect my babies??

1) What type of bird , age and weight. Various types and the affected are about 3 months. I have no idea at the weight.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. They really act normal. Their eyes seem to be infected. Some of them had their eyes completely swollen shut. There was a couple that just seemed sort of bubbly. A couple of them seemed to have dirty beaks but not really snotty.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. ??
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Medicated chick starter and some scratch
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Tylan in their water and Vet RX. After a 3 day treatment they seem to have improved.
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I would like to do myself if possible. I am attempting at contacting someone UK to see how to bring in a specimen. But it will be a couple of days till I have a day off.
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. No
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Once they did not need a heat lamp they were placed in a dirt floor in a barn stall.

Oh dear, this is a tough one on your part.

You are right that the MG will leave your birds carriers. There is absolutely no way to totally "cure" MG and take that carrier status away. I think one of the scariest things about MG is that not only does it leave your birds carriers, but it will also transfer from the hen through the hatching egg so if you ever plan on selling hatching eggs, you won't be able to (at least in good conscience

).

If you cull the birds, theoretically speaking, and let the coop and ground stand empty that the infected birds were on for 3 months after disinfecting everything the best you can, then things disease wise should be safe. I've heard people state shorter periods for leaving grounds and coop empty, but this is what the head poultry vet at VA Tech has told me.

There is a vaccination available for MG that you would give in the back of the neck of chicks that are 1 to 10 wks. in age.

As far as knowing for certain if this is what they have, I would recommend you having a necropsy done. I know it's difficult to sacrifice one of the birds, but it's better to know in the long run for your flock and your piece of mind.

I hope this helped some.

Thanks gumpsgirl.
At this time the ones that was sick seem to be better. I gave them tylon for 3 days in their water. None of the other birds seem to be getting it. So would that mean it is not MS??
