Mice, mice, mice in Massachusetts

Does anyone know if putting chicks brooder in the basement is a problem if you have mice? I have the chicks in my family room and I really need to get them downstairs.

Can you put some heavy hardware wire on top, and clamp the edges? My tote is like that. But I haves mine in the kitchen. If your basement is damp in any way, I wouldnt put them down there.
