Mice poop in chicken food.

Traps work fairly well for mice, but rats are much more difficult! Keeping them all out is ideal, but sometimes, if rats show up, more needs to happen.
It's possible to catch a couple of rats in different traps, but most often bait is necessary.

Metal 'looking' or actually metal?

I use a 30 gallon metal can, they will never chew into that.
I also keep snap traps set all year around.

Feed security is important for all flocks. Metal storage bins, a metal treadle feeder, and you prevent the mice and rats from ever colonizing the coop. In the wild rodents have to work hard and forage a large area to survive and they keep their litter sizes down if food is scarce. When humans offer a buffet of chicken feed the rodent population will explode and the increase of prey brings in snakes, owls, hawks, and mammalian predators.
