I’m new to this website, forum etc. I saw on this forum page someone said read Howard e 101 regarding how to get rid of this problem but I don’t know how to find this information from this particular individual.
I really need advice for this problem
Would anyone suggest those electronic devices that plug into electricity?

I have had those pest control plug-in thingys in our basement before, but can't say whether they work one way or another. I don't think they can hurt, though, if you have outlets in your coop.

I believe this is the post others are referring to: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/rat-control-101.1283827/

If you use the search button, you can search by user ("Howard E") and the post title or by terms. I searched ("101").

We live in the country and have lots of mice that like to "share" our chicken food, too. One time, my sister even trapped on in the glove box of our pickup! I definitely should go there and learn some tricks myself.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens and keep us posted with your results!

Bless your heart for researching this. Use the search function using Howard E., all of his posts or posts mentioning him will show up. I talked to Howard a few months back. He basically stopped posting, tired of people not following his advice and asking for more advice. LOL. Great guy, did more research on dealing with rodents than anyone I know. He nailed the topic, but people just look for a silver bullet to avoid the work and expense needed to solve the problem.

Old wives tales abound, peanut butter and cement or other material, essential oils, the electronic thing you mentioned, there is no end to the methods that someone has heard of.

The simple answer is when you stop feeding the rodents they leave. They have no other choice, leave or starve. Three methods, sanitation, exclusion, or extermination. The first works the fastest and the cheapest and it is a permanent fix. Bulk feed in metal drums with lids, clean up the pathways to and from the coop and their nesting area so natural predators thin their ranks, and buy a proper treadle feeder with an inward swinging door, at least two springs that can pre load the door to three to four pounds to prevent the door from being pushed open, and a narrow and distant treadle.

Two suggestions. If you know someone with ferrets put some of their droppings around area mice are coming from. Second- I mix 60,000 heat cayenne pepper powder in their layer feed. Birds can’t taste spicy like mammals can. I order it in bulk from Amazon. Good luck.
