We're new to backyard chickens, but are beginning the process of research and planning. Any advice on specific breeds that fare well to our lower peninsula West Michigan climate? We're looking for good layers who won't require additional heat sources to their coop. (Which is built off the back of an unheated garage.)

Thanks!

Hey, 'neighbor'!
Stop by the Michigan Chat thread and say hello:

Small combs are good, to avoid frostbite.
Big and tall walk-in coop with large roof overhangs and open soffits for year round ventilation.
You'll need power for heating the waterer, unless you want to swap out waterers several times a day.

Oh, and....Welcome to BYC! @Hannekens
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

I used to breed and raise Dorking Chickens excellent well tempered, docile and excellent meat and strong layers even through the Michigan winters I’m in Southeast Michigan. We recently moved and I had sold my breeding stock but I am starting to breed this year and hatch chicks. Even the rooster were great to work with!

See what your local feed store carries, and ask what breeds people have good luck with in that area. But you can't really go wrong with Rhode Islands, Barred Rocks, Black/Red hybrid layers, etc.
