Hi, we live in Barry Co. Michigan and have a flock of 21 pullets and 1 cockerel. Rocky, the barred rock cockerel is proving to have an attitude problem, and thats just not something we can tolerate from our free-range flock, especially since we want chicks from him eventually.
We honestly expected to have at least a few more cockerels and would get to pick the nicest of the bunch, but we somehow got incredibly 'lucky' and all our chicks (even the 7 extra straight-run we ended up with) are pullets! Except with 21 ladies, well one young male has his wings full, so to speak.
We fully free range whenever possible (which is about 90_100% of their waking hours) but have a nice spacious coop/run when we need it. So our gals need a gent(s) who watches over them, but is docile with people.
If he is a gentleman to us, we will gladly keep him with the girls to an advanced age. We are rural, so no issues with crowing and neighbors.
Pretty much any breed will do, so long as they are winter hardy.
I am still new to poultry keeping so I need to clarifyif with more experienced keepers whether we should be looking for 2 cocks for a flock this size, and if so, maybe we should have 2 raised together? Not enough experience to know that answer yet. But we know we need at least one roo, and would prefer him to be from this spring's hatch if possible.
Thanks!
