Might be crazy question but...

is it normal for chickens to go gaga over grass? I'm finding that my chickens seem more interested in the grass than their food. When they were younger (they're about 18wks now) they didn't care for it much. I would only have to move their coop and run to a fresh patch of grass about once every week or two weeks. Now, I'm having to move it everyday because they eat up what's in there daily. It's a 8'x4' run. When they used to come out of the run they'd go straight for their food, now they go straight for the grass.

Normal? I did switch them to pellet layer feed not too long ago. Maybe that has something to do with their new found love of grass? On that note, I wonder if I should stop moving their coop around so they have no choice but to eat the layer?

I've never heard of that but maybe they are missing something in there diet? Mine free range and they peck and scratch in the grass for bugs and food but they don't actually eat the grass. I use a standard layer feed from the feed mill. Maybe you could try giving them some chicken scratch once a day as a treat? MIne go crazy for it!

Don't worry... I think it's normal and they're taking good vitamins from it... mine seek for fresh grass anywhere too... and love eating it... actually all chickens here eat veggies and grasses no problem at all..... and they eat their normal food normally... and have lots of leftovers. ..so they can get everything they need just like if they live in the wild... so they are purely organic.... and are good layers....

Mine forage daily, and are all over the grass all the time. They just nip off the tips of the growing grass and weeds. They have constant access to feed, so it is a supplement to the normal ration.
