once upon last summer. . .
our good friend's neighbor (who is totally crazy) got mad at them for their dog that would bark and wake his wife up in the middle of the day (because she sleeps then).
they gave their dog to us, this would be our 3rd dog in current residence. our other dogs were good with the chickens, one not even noticing them, the other completely scared of them. they were both labradoodles, a cross of labradors and poodles, this new dog was a jack russel terrier. one day, he was gallivanting around the yard on leash, when he decided that our little mille fleur was too cute to not munch on. when it sprang from its hiding place in fear of the white terror terrier, he locked his jaws on its wing, my dad yanked him back, and broke its wing. the dog released, and we had our friend who gave us the dog check out the wound (ironically, she has a aviary degree)
the bones were completely broken, a compound fracture, and the wing was only held on by a flap of skin.
after a month of solitary confinement and bandage wearing, we put her back with a very accepting flock.
nowadays, she can still fly better than all the others, and her wing is almost completely repaired. happy ending!
