Minanora has chooks

Nice intro, and congrats on getting: 1) your own chickens, and 2) getting chicken math out of the way ASAP. That's how I did it, too. Went to buy three from a 4-H'er and came home with 4. You're right, it doesn't seem like much at first, but then ...

I have several of the Czech breeds, but this spring got my first Sapphire Olive Egger. I'm curious why you chose that breed first?

No need to apologize for living your life in the real world instead of online. Sounds good to me, like you already have plenty of cool stuff going on.

Welcome to BYC, and best wishes with your flock!
I love it!

I chose the SOE because they are supposedly pretty quiet, heat tolerant, friendly, take well to free ranging but don't mind being cooped up, and they are supposed to lay shades of green eggs. Out of all the breeds I looked into, which I spent months reading peoples experiences with other breeds, and spent years watching my friends chickens and mother in laws.... SOE seems like a winner. So far they're as described!

My girls are almost 15 weeks old. All but one are doing the submissive squat, and yesterday our girl, Susu, that started squatting at 12 weeks laid her first egg! However, it was brown. But that's okay. If all of them lay brown eggs I'm going to laugh.

My smallest hen that isn't squatting quite yet is named Tinkerbell, we call her Tinki. She's lowest on the pecking order and when she was about 6 weeks old she had a mineral deficiency due to her low pecking order and medicated feed. I had to shoot poultry drench down her throat for 4 days to get her back in balance. She's my favorite of the flock, is the most cuddly and makes the cutest noises.

In all I have Susu, Merlin, Fidget, Hiker, Princess Peach (Peaches), and Tinkerbell (Tinki)

I should have probably gotten more than one breed of chicken when I got ours but they didn't have any of the other breeds I wanted at the time so I just got all SOEs. However I will say that only two of them look almost identical; one of the 6, Hiker, has gold lacing on her hackle feathers and eyebrows. It looks a little funny on her dark grey and blue feathers honestly. I'll get some photos of the crew up at some point.

Thank you for the warm welcome and well wishes. We definitely have plenty going on around here!

Welcome to the coop!

Where in this world do you live? Sounds like somewhere near the ocean... 🩵

Good luck on your chicken-keeping journey! This forum is a wonderful place to come with questions, thoughts, and insights!!

Thank you!

We live about 30 minutes from the coast. Central coast California but inland just enough that it gets hotter in the summers and colder in the winters. Can't grow citrus or avocados in our climate, but we grow stone fruits with up to 1200 chilling hours. It doesn't usually get below 25F here but it can get up to 120F in the dog days of summer. Generally our highest summer temps are 103-108F. There are actually micro climates in our town that can grow avocados and citrus without fear of freezing or burning. Literally within 5 miles due to the topography and coastal influence.
