Hi all,

A friend has gone overseas and I volunteered to take care of his chooks. Anyway, the instructions left were very very brief. Basically there is a large bag of pallet mix (full of stuff like sunflower seeds etc).
He just said feed them this pallet mix and some greens.

Now I am confused, there are 6 chooks (all different types except 2) they lay 2 eggs a day. Every day before work I have been filling their gravity feeder half full with pallet mix (the feed is approx 3.5" x 3.5" x 30"). When I come home from work this is empty

What I would like to know is am I overfeeding them or underfeeding them? There are 10-20 sparrows that also seem to be in the cage when I go to check the chooks, so I suspect they might be enjoying a bit of the pallet mix.

Also, there are two brown chooks (they similar ones) that tend to dominate all the others when it comes to food, is this normal? Should I do anything?

I have been changing their water everyday!

Basically, I need your help regarding:

- Over feeding/under feeding? How often and how much do I feed them?
-What greens and how often, is stuff like lettuce alright?

Any help is very much appreciated!!!

I think filling the feeder once a day is fine. If your friend was feeding more than that, they would have gotten a bigger feeder.

As long as the girls dont seem raveous when you get there then you should be fine.
How long will your friend be gone?

Thats pretty normal. Chickens have a heirarchy and thye feed accordingly. As long as everyone gets something, you should be fine.

I have been changing their water everyday! Perfect!

Basically, I need your help regarding:

- Over feeding/under feeding? How often and how much do I feed them?
-What greens and how often, is stuff like lettuce alright? Yep, lettuce, cabbage anything green is fine. No potato peels tho'. They are toxic. They can have greens daily. They will eat what they want/like and leave the rest for you to clean out the next day.

Any help is very much appreciated!!!

Good luck!!!
