have you ever heard of rubbing mineral oil on your eggs before storing them? someone told me they will last MONTHS that way. just wondering.

They last a long time right from the hen!

Don't know if they still do it or not, but years ago they used to spray a thin coat of MO on commercial eggs before boxing and shipping.

I just coated 6 dozen with MO, unwashed. I store them in the fridge. One of my hens is laying intermittently now and I think the others are getting ready to quit as well. The only issue I didn’t think about is that I feed their shells back to them. And now I’m thinking I should not feed the MO treated ones back to them even after washing?? Any thoughts? They are not eating as much calcium right now but they’ve been getting cauliflower, arugula and black oil sunflower seeds more lately.

Funny story: after two missed eggs I thought my girl who was egg bound last year was having another bout even though she was acting perfectly fine. So I promptly took her inside and have her a warm soak and massaged her belly lol. I placed the camera in the coop and saw that it was not her after all and she is still laying lol. She took one for the team. (The one that actually missed the egg has almost identical eggs to the previously egg bound one). The other two are distinctly different.)
