Hi there,
We live in the city limits but we are country at heart! We have a family of 7 me, my husband, four kids, 3 boys (ages 13, 5, and 9.5 months), one girl (age 12), and a grandpa (age 82)!
We are all about Sustainable Living and teaching our children how to go beyond what they know as the grocery store. I am big on organic foods, healthy cooking, discovering healthier alternatives to snack foods, eating fresh, and preserving foods. I am looking for suggestions, comments, tips, and lessons learned from anyone with a few minutes to share their experiences with me.
**We just got 5 pullets, one Buff Orpington, one Plymouth Rock, one Cuckoo Maran, one Ameraucana, and one Blue Jersey Giant. I am wondering what other peoples experiences are with egg layers / dual purpose meat chickens? What are your suggestions for the most eggs (quantity per year), largest eggs, year round production, unique colored eggs, and great chickens to own? They have to be cold hardy birds as we live in western Washington. Also would like tips on treats, scratch, layer, supplements, Etc.
**I would like suggestions on coops / maintenance, we are building our coop this weekend (I have found some plans for free online), I welcome any suggestions on coop building, cleaning, maintenance, tricks you have learned, keeping predators out, changing bedding, Etc.
**Last but not least would love any tips on gardening, best fertilizers, things that grow well in the pacific northwest, planting (direct sow and transplants), pruning, harvesting, maintenance, Etc.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post, I look forward to hearing from you and gaining knowledge from many.
Sincerely,
Cherish
