I got a call from the PO this morning, that my 10 baby turkeys had arrived, but were all dead. I'm so glad I went right over to pick them up. When we got home, I couldn't bear not to double-check all of them 85 times before putting them in the trash. I'm glad I did! I saw a leg kick, and picked that one up right away. He was cold to the touch, and barely breathing. I, at lightning speed, mixed together a warm water/corn syrup/electrolyte mixture and gave him 1-2 mL, and put him right out in the sun. It's the perfect temp out right now, 95 degrees exactly. He's soaking wet, they all were. I don't know how the box got wet, and they were shipped on Wednesday...so it's no wonder the rest died.

He pooped a little bit, made a bit of a peep, opens and closes his beak, but won't move other than that. I tell you what, if this little guy makes it...he'll be safe from being dinner for the rest of his life.

Next time you get a call to pick up your "dead chicks"...make sure you hurry over and check anyway, I'm glad I did!

I'll post a picture of him in a little bit.

im glad you have a live one and i cant wait for the pics but im sorry for the loss of the other nine make sure you tell the place you got em from that they arrived dead and they will probly send more of give a refund again sorry

I called Ideal from the PO, but now will be calling them back to let them know that they can still charge me for 1 turkey. I'm so bummed though, because I really wanted the ten of them, and they are all done with the Bourbon Reds for now.

Well, can't seem to get my photos into Flickr from iPhoto...don't know why, I've never had problems before. So, you'll just have to take my word for it that baby turkey "Cookie" (name courtesy of my 4 year old) is doing better. He fights me when I try to feed him, and he'll peep now and hold up his head. Still not standing, but considering how he looked when I first discovered him...this is a vast improvement. A couple hours in the desert sun did him some good! I think he's pulling through since he was warmed up and dried off so quickly.

Something similiar happened to me last year. They tipped over the waterer on a very warm day. I brought them out onto the cool grass and tried to give them water. Only one survived...her name is Tamona and she is the farm pet. She has seen others come and go but she will never be dinner. She sometimes wanders around the neighborhoood
