Not much of a story but it was rather crazy watching it go down...
This year the squirrel population has been the highest since the great culling of the late 80s. It's too the point where they are a problem and it's not just the humans suffering. One of the young fellows made his way into the coup. The 7 hens didn't notice him till I approached and they came running for their treat. Jenni was the first to spot the intruder and set up camp at the door. I went over to shoo the critter out not really thinking anything more than he needed to exit the enclosure. Jenni's interest became the flocks' interest and they all lined up at the door shoulder to shoulder two ranks deep. Noticing this posture I paused for a moment contemplating my next move, and that of mr squirrel who had just settled down enough to take note of this new threat. The flock didn't wait and started filing in the door. The melee that followed was too fast for me to register in much detail. The hens with Abby or Hope in the lead full on assaulted the squirrel. He for his part was crazy quick and lept from the side to the ground to the side and roof and back again, I think doing rather well for himself in as far as dodging the attacks and then some what suddenly the door and freedom.
The ladies filled back out and seemed rather unimpressed with my offering of apple and strawberry.
