My little 4 year old daughter and I hatched some chicks as a project. They're 2 weeks old and we let them loose in the back yard during the day, keep them inside at night.
Today, as my little girl was rounding them up, one squeezed under the fence. She panicked, but my husband got out there pretty quickly to fetch it and saw no trace of it. We haven't found it yet and it's been hours and it's dark now. I've been out calling to it (peeping), I took 2 other chicks out hoping it would come to them, and I've been searching with a flashlight. We are in a subdivision, but there were no dogs or cats around when it got out. I've never seen a hawk around here, and we do have a woods at the bottom of the yard that probably has many predators in it, but nothing but flat lawn where it got out. No sign of feathers or anything.
We have not heard it calling for the others at all, so are kind of assuming something got it. Do you think there is any chance it is still out there and ok? If so, what could I do to lure it to me?
We're just devastated.
