Hello!
New user here, made my account as I am currently in need of desperate help for one of my cockerels.
Recently I had a cockerel who has a sever mite problem. His vent was quite covered in mite eggs (I only realised how bad it was today when I noticed the base of his neck feathers are COVERED in the eggs!) and gave him a gentle sponge bath to remove built up poop from his vent/clip back feathers with dried on poop. I didn't want to risk fly-strike but couldn't get the mass of eggs off of his vent.
I have never had any of my birds have such a bad case of mites before, and thankfully he is on his own (he was too aggressive towards our hens when he was 'excited' and caused our poor ladies quite a bit of harm) so the mites won't spread to my other flock. But this isn't where the issue ends, as he has quite a strange walk with him as well. He seems to hesitate and pull his leg very high up to his chest when taking a step. I'm worried it might be because he's anaemic due to the mites. Is this the case? I've never had a chicken walk like this before and I'm extremely worried its due to the horrible mites on him.
For more context, my boy is an Ixworth and is about 2 years old (I have no weight for him, however I do believe he is a little underweight) but his wattle/comb is still fairly red (a tiny bit paler then my other cockerel's wattle/comb). I have used some mite powder on him and his home today to try and kill off any adults.
If photos of the infestation is needed, please let me know. I will try and get them asap.
