I'm at one of those moments in chicken keeping right now we're as clean and healthy as I try to keep everything and everyone there are lots of problems. I saw red mites in the coop last week so I dusted it with DE, hoping that takes care of the problem but most of the birds have bare backs and under their wings...a couple birds have poop with cecal worms in them from time to time and extremely watery poop, and today on one of the birds there is dried blood on her face and a tip on her comb is black so it looks like it was bleeding. I found dried blood on top of the feed can, a little on the waterer, and a little on a PVC pipe in the run. Everyone is acting okay so it's not like anyone is at death's door or anything, but I'm kind of stressed with all of this and don't know what to do...oh, and one of our Easter Eggers suddenly has little white bumps on her comb!!

Permethrin spray. I think because of all of the rain that a lot of places have had earlier this year the mites and such are out in full force. This is the first year I ever had them. It seem that many wild creatures can introduce them such as wild birds. At first I thought my birds must be going through an early molt but upon closer inspection I discovered mites. I have been spraying all of the coops, walls, floors, nest boxes, roosts, everywhere being sure I hit all the cracks and crevices. I finally haven't seen any more on the birds but I'm going to keep on spraying. I even gave the birds a spray while they were on the roosts. DE didn't do a thing for me. For the worms I put some pour on Ivermectin on their necks, just a few drops.

Even though there is a good amount of DE under the shavings I saw there were red mites in the corners beneath the bedding today. :( I might clean out all the shavings I can get, maybe pour boiling water on the wood coop floor, then when it dries put down DE and fresh bedding. I don't know if there are any in the run so I'll put down DE in there too. Where the rooster is kept which is still off the coop I can't really change the bedding in there too easily so I'll put down DE and fresh bedding and hope for the best. Hoping to deworm the birds soon...

Like Cmom stated, Permethrin 10% liquid concentrate would be best to treat your coop. You can also spray your birds with the diluted solution according to the instructions attached to the bottle. The permethrin stays persistent for 30 days.
Remove all bedding and dispose of it, including nesting material. Spray inside the coop, nests and roosts and let it dry. Wear a mask and old clothes while spraying.
Most hardware stores carry the product.

DE wont kill mites as you are seeing this first hand. Red mites are vectors of many diseases, including spirochetes which can infect birds and may require antibiotic treatments IF the infection isnt severe, only bloodwork can tell. Severe infections cannot be treated. The massive kill off of spirochetes in the chickens blood will kill the infected chicken(s.)

You stated that you saw cecal worms in feces. Please post a pic of them if you get the chance. It's not often that cecal worms are present in feces and a pic would help us identify them. Thanks. :)
