i know at least one of my chickens has mites i went to tsc to get something for it but when i asked they said they didnt have anything that would work for chickens, the guys told me to go to the hardware store or the lawn and garden section and get something called demitrius earth? or 7 dust? well i thought i oughta ask you guys first

They were talking about diatomaceous earth(DE) and Sevin dust.
If you go looking for the DE make sure it's food grade. You won't find it at the hardware. It is also getting harder to find the Sevin in some places. I have taken to using the liquid concentrate and diluting it to about 10% active.
You can use the DE and dust in a large pan of sand and the birds will dust themselves. Some people swear by the DE and others swear at it, but that's all covered here on another thread.

If you already have the mites, it's good practice to clean the coop down to the bare walls and floor and treat all surfaces.

Sevin dust 5% is a garden product. I found mine at Wal-mart. I have yet to get mites or lice on my chickens.
I have used it on my dogs for fleas and it works well.
I put some DE in with my pine shavings each time I clean out the coop, seems to be working so far.
Good luck.
